Multilayered Danish Brass Pendant Light, Denmark 1960s (sold)

$0.00

Throughout the past decades, Denmark has been home to the creation of exceptional lighting designs. It all started with the Danish light master, Poul Henningsen in the 1920s, who defined the aesthetic of the following decades, and of this lamp.

The 20th century - especially of the mid-century era - laid out the foundations of the idea that good lighting is a combination of shape and function. Above all else, Danish design is thought through to the smallest element as this pendant light exemplifies it. This model, much like the designs of Poul Henningsen, was developed during the 1960s, likely in response to the constant changes made to the shape and size of incandescent bulbs by bulb manufacturers. The distinctive multilayered construction is made entirely of solid brass with a polished surface that results in an intrinsically mid-century modern look. The graduated tiers and their individual shapes define the design, with five separate parts. What differentiates this model from the similar layered contemporaries, are the vertical cylindrical parts that frame the tiered plates. While they have a functional role, the aesthetic role they take on is just as important as they add straight vertical lines to the larger horizontal plates thus balancing out the design. The pendant emits a lateral light as well as illuminating itself, providing a soft radiance from within its core. The warm hue of the brass is accentuated on multiple parts of the lamp thanks to the smart position of the lightbulb. This pendant light hangs from the ceiling suspended by a white cord that cleverly contrasts to the brass to highlight its material qualities.

One of the many valuable things about a pendant fixture is that it brings the light down from the ceiling and puts it closer to the table/couch, making it very useful for task lighting. This model can also serve a purely aesthetic task thanks to its high-quality material and execution.
