The partnership of two natural materials. The caned seat and backrest of the chair are supported by the solid oak frame. The material is often referred to as ‘cord’, which was often used in Danish furniture of the 1940s to the 1960s. Danish cord is a three-ply fiber twisted paper cord, which has a similar appearance to rush. Although rush has been used for seating for centuries, cord was preferred by Danish craftsmen thanks to its availability and continuous lengths. It gained popularity starting after World War II in Denmark and other European countries. It is generally only seen on high end, quality made furnishings. This is mainly because the weave patterns of cord are much more intricate, as seen in this chair. Danish Modern designers often made unique weaving patterns for specific chair designs.
The canes of this unique chair are woven around the oaken frame in a masterly manner, held in place with pegs or splints of cane, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing but also durable chair. The oaken structure and legs frame the woven parts beautifully, while the scarce use of metal screws keeps the organic, natural feel. The precise carpentry work is the testimony of expert craftsmanship, since the weaves and variations are highly advanced techniques.
On this chair the ‘rushing pattern’ can be observed, in which the Danish cord mimics traditional rushing with the Danish cord material. Often these chairs have extensive slots that the Danish cord must be fed through which makes these seats more time consuming. Today, rushing is a term used for the specific technique of weaving continuous rope around rungs to create solid seats and backs with a pattern that resembles triangles meeting in the middle- regardless of material used. Rushing is a speciality skill and is very hard and demanding on the body, therefore chairs with this pattern affirm dedication, precision and unparalleled skill.
