Mid-Century Scandinavian Blonde Oak Lounge Chair, Scandinavia 1970s (sold)

The prevailing ethos in Scandinavia has long been socially inclusive, liberal and tolerant, which has led to the shared conviction that it is the role of design to improve life for everyone. As a consequence, simple, understated, well-made products have long been preferred over the conspicuous consumption of status symbols or showy grandiose effect.

These precursors have provided the model and set of values which still inspire Scandinavian design: durability, functionality, reliability - but also less tangible values such as simplicity, joy, and daily pleasure visible through design. This lounge chair visualizes these values by providing comfort, a balance of materials and proportions created with expert craftsmanship. The blonde oak frame is light in every sense of the word, with an airy structure and beautiful colour. The slat back is composed of four symmetrically arranged slats that are gently bent and forms a 120-degree angle with the raised seat. This feature assures great comfort for the sitter, while it also enhances the cosy look. Following in this aesthetic and functional vein are the wide armrests that showcase the oak’s pattern and add to the structural construction of the frame. The frame’s straight, raw lines rounded at their edges are adopted by the seat and back cushions. The light bouclé’s interesting texture really stands out next to the oak’s smooth surface and highlights the slats of the back.

In Scandinavian design, things are made to last rather than to be replaced, while the home enhances an unburdened lifestyle. Living well is in itself a form of art, and furniture design is meant to complement it. This lounge chair is ideal to serve these purposes in an elegant, comfortable, and stylish manner.
