No other movement in decorative arts and architecture was ever able to celebrate urban life in such a glamorous and luxurious manner as Art Deco. But one country, in particular, wears the Art Deco crown: France. Because unlike much Art Deco elsewhere, including the US, French Art Deco furniture tended to be hand-crafted rather than mass-produced.

There is a clear decorative feel to this lounge chair with indulgent shaping and a sophisticated, sartorial attitude.‎ Not only is the quality is apparent, but also the obvious influences of the Art Deco movement. There are interesting lines and angles from all sides of the elaborate wooden structure, starting from the tapered hexagonal back. The reclined back serves as a frame for the upholstery, where the wood is only visible on the top. The sides are embraced by the arms that connect directly to the back to continue their sloping angle towards the front. The smaller elements in the front have a sharper angle that brings the chair into balance as it contrasts to the reclined position of the back. The sharp edges highlight the rectangular frame, especially from the sides. The base is similarly shaped with clean lines and four short, sculpted legs where the hand made quality is especially apparent. The overall shape is reminiscent of club chairs, but the touch of Art Deco is unmistakeable. The veneered walnut’s grain and pattern is just as much a decorative element as the frame itself, enriching the design with its various colour variations.

The Art Deco movement revolutionized interior design and furniture in this style is hugely popular among connoisseurs even today. French furniture makers embraced this style, and in the years between the World Wars, produced some of the most exciting and innovative Art Deco furniture the world had seen, including this exceptional lounge chair.
