Scandinavian Art Deco Armchairs, Scandinavia 1930s (sold)

Scandinavian Art Deco Armchairs, Scandinavia 1930s (sold)

Unsurprisingly, the detailing and glamour of Art Deco married exceptionally well with the simplicity and sleek design of Scandinavia. The result is this pair of chairs: elegance with bold curves with premium materials serving functionality.

As with Scandinavian design, Art Deco gave rise to a new approach to design after the war. Moving away from Art Nouveau and influenced by sleek, bold, and geometric lines, Art Deco took form in architecture, interiors, decor and much more. It wasn’t long before the two styles met; Art Deco designers looked to Scandinavian design, in particular, to learn from the functional shapes that the style had become known for. What the pairing of Scandinavian and Art Deco design does so well is seen in the frames of these chairs: the balance of character that shines through the curves and materials. While the backs and seats are both rounded and the arms have a defining curve extending into the front legs, the minimalism of Scandinavian design is still apparent. This is primarily the result of the clearly defined lines and traditional pairing of materials. The exposed wooden legs and arms show the beautiful pattern of the wood and serve as the natural element against the luxurious light wool blend upholstery. The lush texture of the wool pairs immensely well with the shape of these chairs, elevating the thick seats and oval backs.

These armchairs are ideal to bring a vintage aesthetic into a room without dominating the rest of the interiors. Art Deco embraced a carefree spirit, and so does Scandinavian design. This pair inherited the best characteristics of both styles and can be considered a visual bridge between two defining design eras of the 20th century.
