Eastern Finland Electricity), was one of the lesser known gems of Finland’s lighting manufacturers. Founded in 1945, after World War II, Itsu produced characteristic models in small quantities, that endure to this day through their masterful design and great quality.

This ceiling light exemplifies that restrained approach through its striking inverted conical shade made from finely pleated fabric. Olle Alberius was one of Sweden's foremost ceramic and glass designers during the 20th century. After studying at the Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, he joined Rörstrand in 1963, where he designed both unique stoneware and glass pieces. Jo Hammerborg was closely associated with the transformation of Danish lighting manufacturer Fog & Mørup during the post-war period. He joined the company as head of design in 1957 and remained there until 1980, developing numerous lighting models during those years. Under his direction, Fog & Mørup grew as one of the largest lighting manufacturers in Denmark in the 20th century, creating great models, such as this floor lamp.

The “Kardinal” lamp was designed in 1960s, placing it within Hammerborg’s productive time as a director of Fog & Mørup. The piece has a slender construction, with a vertical stem rising from a geometrical square base. Wood is the dominant material, giving both the base and stem a warm surface, that shows the natural grain of the material. Copper elements intertwine with the wood in interrupted sections and create a lovely juxtaposition of materials, tied in by the similar tonal palette. The square base is bold enough to provide visual weight that anchors the otherwise narrow structure. At the top, the stem terminates in a compact textile shade. The simple geometry of the form continues the effect created by the base. Rather than using an elaborate structure, Hammerborg kept the components visually straightforward, allowing visual proportion and material quality to define the lamp.

About the designer:

Danish designer Jo Hammerborg (1920–1982) was one of the defining figures of mid-century Scandinavian lighting. Originally trained as a silversmith, Hammerborg studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts before spending eight years at Georg Jensen, where his understanding of metalwork, proportion and craftsmanship took shape. In 1940-45 he participated in Denmark’s resistance and struggle for freedom as a saboteur.

Afterwards, Hammerborg returned to design, and in 1957, became chief designer at Danish lighting manufacturer Fog & Mørup. Under his direction, the company entered its most creative and commercially successful period. A prolific designer with a sharp eye for detail, Hammerborg created more than 180 lamps, combining sculptural forms with a careful understanding of how light interacts with metal and space. His silversmith background is evident throughout his work. Clean silhouettes, organic curves and precisely worked surfaces in materials such as brass, copper and aluminium gave his lamps a distinctly refined character. Designs such as the Orient pendant capture this approach particularly well: elegant and understated, yet unmistakably sculptural.

Hammerborg was as adventurous outside the studio as he was inventive within it. He was an active and very versatile athlete who, was also a pioneer in parachuting and flying. He died in a skydiving accident in 1982 at the age of 62. Today, his lighting remains highly sought after, securing his place among the most distinctive names in Danish mid-century design.

This very rare model consists of a pleated fabric shade that is supported by a thin brass pole. The shade, which is closed at the top, difuses the light evenly and gives a beautiful subdued light that is very characteristic for the work of Hans-Agne Jakobsson. At the top of the stem, there is a signature brass ring that can be found on multiple of Jakobsson’s designs, such as on the “B99” table lamp. The heavy foot that keeps the lamp firmly in place, is made of cast iron.

Carl Auböck II was born in Vienna, Austria in 1900. After finishing the School of Graphic Design and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he attended the Bauhaus and joined a small group of artists in becoming the founding members of the now legendary school.

This pair of “Vice Versa” floor lamps reflects a fascination with sculptural simplicity and materials, while representing a unique piece of design history. The model, first thought to be created by Auböck 1952, has caused a debate within the design world decades after it was first issued. Within Denmark, the “Vice Versa” lamp was widely sold under the label of Svend Aage Holm-Sørensen, a key figure of Scandinavian design. The controversy still surrounds the model today, however what is undisputed is its beauty. Each lamp is composed of a slender black lacquered metal stem rising from a circular weighted base, creating a simple vertical silhouette. At the top sits the defining feature: a shade placed on a round metal holder. The shade can be reversed and re-positioned, allowing the direction and character of the light to shift depending on its placement. This element reflects Bauhaus functionality principles while still feeling elegant. Despite the minimal construction, the lamps have a strong sculptural presence, particularly through the balance between the thin stem and the oversized curved reflector that mirrors the conical base and ties in the design.

In 1925, Karl Heinrich Auböck passed away at the age of 53, leaving Carl II and the sculptor Mara Uckunowa, Carl’s wife, to take over operations of the Werkstätte at 23 Bernardgasse. In 1954 Carl Auböck II was awarded four gold medals at the Milan Triennale for designing a range of metalware, and pieces like this pair of lamps stand as proof of his genius.

This model “15490” table lamp was made by Swedish designer and sculptor, Harald Notini. He was the artistic leader at Böhlmarks and is represented at the “Nationalmuseum” in Stockholm.
