Axel Einar Hjorth’s designs are sharply distinctive in style, materials, and character. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Hjorth did not conform to the socially oriented ideas produced by Svensk Form (the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design). He often incorporated playful ornamentation from different historical periods by which he was inspired, such as the French Art Déco, using mixed exotic woods, bright colours, and textiles, as this pair or “Radio” chairs showcase.

Designed in the first half of the 20th century, these armchairs possess a refined and slender appearance with distinctive details. The sleek wooden frames offer a beautiful contrast to the neat upholstery of the seats, creating a visually captivating aesthetic. Together, they make for a harmonious balance between contemporary elegance and traditional style. Even though Swedish design is generally democratic and meant for the masses, pieces were not stripped of all beauty for the sake of functionality. The importance of this balance can be identified in the design and execution of these chairs as well. The craftsmanship displayed in this model is a testament to the high standards of Swedish design in the early 20th century, reflecting both the technical skill and artistic vision of both Hjorth and Nordiska Kompaniet. This pair not only serves as a timeless work of art, but also showcases the elegance and innovation of the era.

The Swedish company Nordiska Kompaniet manufactured this pair with utmost care for its quality and design. Axel Einar Hjorth worked as the lead designer for the department store from 1926 to 1938. The company was among the most renowned Swedish manufacturers during the mid-century era, and this "Radio" model is a prime example of the great success of their works.

This set of four pine dining chairs embodies the warmth and clarity that defined Nordic mid century design. Rooted in a philosophy that valued honest materials and practical construction, Scandinavian modernism focused on everyday functionality while maintaining a strong visual identity. Designers across Denmark, Sweden, and Finland favoured native woods such as pine for its availability, durability, and expressive grain. The result was furniture that felt approachable and grounded, yet carefully considered in proportion and detail.

These chairs reflect that tradition through their straightforward silhouettes and subtle shaping, demonstrating how modest forms can achieve lasting character. Each chair features a pine frame with a gently rounded seat and tapering legs that provide both stability and visual lightness. The backrests are made out of slender vertical spindles supporting a shaped top, slightly curved for comfort and ergonomic support. The natural grain of the pine is clearly visible throughout, adding warmth and texture without the need for additional ornamentation. The seats have smooth contours, making them suitable for dining use, and their compact nature allows them to fit easily around a variety of table sizes.

Versatile and well-crafted, this set’s restrained design can integrate seamlessly into both traditional and contemporary interiors. The combination of honest craftsmanship, functional comfort, and proportions makes this set a good and charming addition to any setting that values Scandinavian design principles.

The work of Swedish designers and cabinetmakers remains disarmingly fresh over 80 years after their creation. There is something universally appealing about Swedish furniture; its simplicity is often copied, but its vibe is difficult to emulate. This is based on a unique medley of elements including solid wood, inspiration from historic and traditional styles and techniques, and of course, master craftsmanship.

While other Nordic countries explored similar design principles, the Swedish interpretation stands out for its refined minimalism. Swedish Modern is an inheritance coming from a rich tradition of beauty-loving people, courageous enough to break away from the past to entertain new forms for living. So, what sets Swedish Modern pieces apart, even within the broader Scandinavian design spectrum, is their particular emphasis on understated elegance. This set of dining chairs exemplifies this approach, featuring a subtle yet distinctive design that effortlessly combines form and function. While dining chairs are generally more utilitarian types of seating, this set of four still manages to look cosy and warm thanks to the pairing of materials. The main decorative element remains the beauty of the birch wood, with its distinctive colour variation and grain. Birch's durability and fine grain also contribute to the longevity of these chairs, showcasing the intersection of aesthetics and practicality inherent in Swedish design. Another defining feature of these chairs lies in their expertly fitted upholstered seats, enveloped in a sumptuous brownish fabric. This choice of upholstery not only adds a touch of luxury, but also serves as a nod to comfort, demonstrating the Swedish commitment to creating furniture that is both aesthetically pleasing and inviting. The simple, warm colour palette and gentle design make this set of chairs an ideal addition to both contemporary and traditional living spaces. It is evident that the maker of these chairs was highly aware of body proportions, prioritising comfort just as much as the visual qualities.

The term Swedish Modern was quickly established as a reinterpretation of modernity during the 1940s, and in the new style, early and square functionalism was replaced by a freer and more artistic ideal. This set of dining chairs beautifully stands as a testament to this rich legacy. Overall, these pieces are stylish from all angles and seek to complement their surroundings.

Swedish architect and furniture designer Axel Einar Hjorth served as the lead designer for Sweden’s Nordiska Kompaniet department store from 1926 to 1938. During this time, Hjorth designed the “Sportstugemöbler” series (which translates to “sports cabin furnishings”), a collection of wooden furniture designed for country homes. The various models in the sportstugemöbler series took their names from the Stockholm archipelago – including Blidö, Lovö, and famously, Utö.

The ‘Utö’ chair was designed in 1932 as part of the collection. Unlike the department store's interiors for floors and villas in the cities, the ‘Utö’ design had a simple character with robust and minimalist basic shapes in solid pine. Accordingly, the design of this chair focuses on clean lines and the material itself. Made of pine wood, the chair is strong, reflecting Hjorth’s principles according to which he mixed the ideals of the modernist movement with provincial Swedish traditions, producing a unique and primitive modernism. It demonstrates a conscious construction aesthetic, where the joinery and fittings related to traditional craftsmanship are emphasized. Dominated by rounded, yet defined lines, the chair has a spindle backrest and ergonomically carved seat. The design eludes harmony and stability, fitting the summer cabin concept perfectly.

Hjorth's aesthetic alludes to both the traditional simplicity of the common people and the radical aesthetics of international modernism. The ‘sports cottage furniture’ that this dining chair is part of also had an influence on the designer’s contemporaries and inspired Carl Malmsten, among others. In an international perspective, Hjorth's “sportstugemöbler” series was the forerunner of later pioneering designers such as Charlotte Perriand. It is therefore no surprise that the ‘Utö’ chari became part of Swedish and international modernist design history. In their time, the pieces of the Utö collection may have appeared as pioneering and radical, but today they are viewed as status symbols in interiors of international character.

About the designer:

Axel Einar Hjorthwas born in a small Swedish village named Krokek, just outside Norrköping, on March 7, 1888. At the age of 20, he moved to Stockholm to study architecture and design at the Högre Konstindustriella Skolan.

Although he never graduated, in the 1920s Hjorth started working as a furniture designer for various manufacturers, such as H. Joop & Co., Myrestedt & Stern, Jonssons, and Nordiska Kompaniet. Hjorth’s designs from this period had neoclassical features combined with Swedish Grace. This romantic national style of Sweden was elegant and refined, yet simple. The anniversary exhibition of 1923 in Gothenburg marked the breakthrough of Swedish decorative arts, and made Axel Einar Hjorth a well-respected artist. From October 1926, Hjorth became the chief designer and architect of Nordiska Kompaniet department store in Stockholm. In the 1930s, Hjorth designed a furniture collection out of pine meant for serial production known as Sportstugemöbler (furniture for holiday houses).

Hjorth’s designs, from the luxury of neoclassicism to the severity of functionalism, are sharply distinctive in style, materials, and character. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Hjorth did not conform to the socially oriented ideas produced by Svensk Form (the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design). He played a significant role in the development of Swedish society as a whole, and particularly in Swedish industrial art

Today Hjorth is often viewed as a precursor to the modern designs popularized by Charlotte Perriand, Jean Royére, Pierre Chapo, or Josef Frank. Recently, there has been a revival of appreciation for his work, showing his genius in a new light.

Produced in 1923, this set of four “Bungalow” dining chairs by Nordiska Kompaniet is a true testament of early 20th century Scandinavian design principles, highlighted by the chairs’ quiet simplicity and quality materials. The vision and aim of Nordiska Kompaniet, a leading Swedish manufacturer since 1902, was to focus on innovative, forward-thinking designers to create pieces that would elevate Stockholm internationally and rival the grandness of Paris.

Made of premium quality wood, the set references the natural materials that are in abundance in the deep forests of Sweden, covering more than three-fifths of the country. With the designer’s choice of combining different materials, the open structure of the rattan seats adds lightness and airiness to the chairs, perfectly balancing out their durable birch structure. Beautifully woven, the rattan is placed neatly and creates a comfortable seating experience. The carved elements at the end of the front legs, as well as an inward ring just below the rattan seating, adds to the quiet charisma of the chairs. The two back legs, which tilt gently, continue a line into the backrest that is completed by two cross-rails that support the sitter. The precious details in the birch grain of each chair are wonderfully unique, while the set still projects cohesion due to its warm-toned hues and colours. The smooth, clean finish of the chairs brings forth a refined and elegant appearance into the space they occupy.

The classic design of this set is suitable for a variety of interiors; whether placed around the dining table or used individually, these chairs offer a sophisticated and distinct blend of style and comfort, inviting the sitter to slow down and rest.

Featuring clean forms without exaggeration, this set highlights the quality of work produced at Nordiska Kompaniet in the early 20th century. They are crafted from pine - a valuable material used in furniture manufacturing thanks its natural grain that guarantees that each piece is unique. This characteristic is especially important in the case of this set of four, as each chair is unique, but together they still form a gorgeous set.

Humble in their material and design, the chairs draw attention thanks to their distinctive look and personality. The construction strips back the unnecessary, showcasing only essential elements. The pine wood is left in its natural form as much as possible, while also prioritising functionality and longevity. Pine furniture has been favoured in Scandinavia for centuries and we are witnessing a contemporary renewal of interest and appreciation for it as well. While they showcase deliberate plainness, these chairs still have a welcoming look. The sole form of ornamentation in the design is found in the backrests of each chair where two planks of wood are constructed into a ‘T’ shape, creating an airy look. The high backs and seats also provide plenty of surface to expose the beauty of the wood. Furthermore, the ingenious use of joinery in these chairs is noteworthy, highlighting the structural integrity of the pieces.

These chairs are in line with the Swedish ideals of functional furniture. However, they also portray a sense of tranquillity that is unique to Scandinavia. This set is sure to bring this sense to any space while providing stability, sitting comfort, and natural beauty via its material.

Designer Bengt Ruda was the first qualified designer to be employed at IKEA. Before being recruited in 1957, he had designed furniture for the high-end department store Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), working among other things on the self-assembly Triva series.

The “GRILL” chairs are distinctive for their three-legged design, crafted from laminated teak and birch. These materials lend the chairs a natural and warm appearance. The splayed birch legs also provide stability and a touch of Scandinavian simplicity to the design of the chairs. Moreover, these chairs boast a sleek and contemporary look that seamlessly blend functionality with style.

“GRILL” is a good example of how, from the early days, IKEA focused on smart product development. In 1958, “GRILL” won the jury award at the Society of Crafts and Design’s major design exhibition – the forerunner of Excellent Swedish Design. One of the adjectives used by the panel to describe the little chair was “energetic”.

Wood is the most traditional material for furniture, it is organic, elemental, sturdy, and has become very stylish. The Swedish efforts to create applied art attuned to modern man and his needs have been termed a style, Swedish Modern. Exemplified by these chairs by Swedish designer, Yngve Ekström, the style entails cherishing natural forms and an honest treatment of material.

While during the industrial revolution, furniture manufactured from materials such as steel, aluminium, glass and plastic, began to appear, wood has remained a staple material in Swedish furniture manufacturing. The design offers plenty visually with a striking construction and personality. The fan shaped backrests are composed of wooden spindles with a horizontal top with a soft curve that creates a wavy impression. While the masterfully sculpted and symmetrically arranged individual spindles undeniably define the overall look, the seats and legs are just as appealing, showcasing the natural beauty of the wood and the careful craftsmanship. The seats are carved ergonomically to accommodate the sitter, while the legs are splayed to provide stability. For further structural firmness, three stretchers connect the legs. The manufacturer, Nesto Möbel AB, formerly Nässjö Stolfabrik AB, was one of the largest furniture factories in the Nordics which operated from 1870-1992. In 1972, AB Nässjö Stolfabrik changed its name to Nesto Möbel AB.

“To have designed one good chair might not be a bad life’s work” Yngve Ekström once said. With colleagues like Aalto, Mathsson, Jacobsen and Kjaerholm, Yngve Ekström was part of the post-war modern movement that made the concept “Scandinavian Modern” world-famous. His furniture is represented in many permanent collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

Yngve Ekström was born in 1913 in Småland, where the country’s oldest wooden chair factory was situated. His father died young and Ekström started working in joineries in Vaggeryd at the age of 13. His talent for carpentry and his all-round experience gave him a unique feeling for materials and construction.

Ekström is best known for the "Lamino" armchair, an ergonomic, and minimalist easy chair that he designed in 1956 and which has been in continuous production ever since. In 1999, the "Lamino" was named by the influential Swedish magazine Sköna hem as the Swedish furniture design of the twentieth century.

Ekström was the co-founder of the furniture manufacturer ESE-möbler (later renamed Swedese) with his brother Jerker and business partner Sven Bertil Sjöqvist. Ekström worked at Swedese for over 40 years until his death in 1988.

The design of these chairs relays an insight about the society and culture in which it was produced: closeness to nature, the appreciation of a clutter-free environment and the value of quality handiwork.

This set of dining chairs holds a strong expression with its sturdy shaped, organic design, which is dominated by the natural beauty of the material. The wide backrests showcase the solid pinewood’s beautiful pattern, reinforcing the rustic feel of the design along with the conical legs that are gently tapered and tilted to support stability.

Wood, in many ways, is more valuable than other materials used in furniture manufacturing because its natural grain guarantees that each piece is unique. This is especially important in the case of this set of five, as each chair is unique but together, they still form a gorgeous set. The love for wood was carried well into the late 20th century, inspired by mid-century modernism.

This Scandinavian set carries with it the same beloved modernist characteristics that were applied to mid-century pieces – simplicity, functionality – and shows the continuing appreciation of quality materials and craftsmanship. The set’s aesthetic is defined by the angled and slatted backrests with three horizontal slats. The slats have a gentle “hill” shape with a rounded top. This structure creates an airy and rhythmic look that is further complemented by the legs’ side stretchers that, like the rest of the frames, have straight lines. The solid wood bodies have strong, confident lines, yet, the set still exudes organic charm resulting from the richly coloured pinewood, the gently rounded edges and the upholstered seats. Pine is a truly versatile wood with strong patterns and grain in various colours. Its natural qualities are decorative elements in themselves, adding to the organic charm of this set that is evocative of the mid-century aesthetic. The seats are upholstered in a soft, light sheepskin that pairs beautifully with the wood’s smooth surface and colour. The resulting look is even more impactful when the five chairs are placed together.

Defined by their clean lines, simplicity of design, high quality materials and excellent joinery, each of these dining chairs was created by exceptionally skilled Scandinavian craftsmen who made sure they are just as durable, sturdy, and functional as their predecessors.

These “Ekerö” chairs are often compared to Axel Einar Hjorth’s Utö model, and not without a reason. These models are often mentioned together thanks to their material and visual resemblance. Both models were produced by Nordiska Kompaniet during the 1930s.

The Ekerö line include two seating models, including these dining chairs and a sofa. Executed in European pine wood, these chairs have a very traditional, simple Swedish look characterized by sturdy and basic forms in solid, local wood. It is a combination of folklore with the aesthetics of early international modernism. The design is quite simplistic: four tapered legs, solid seating and spindle or slat back all created out of pine. Sensitive touches enliven the simple design, visible in the careful craftsmanship. While there is a deliberate plainness and crudity, much like in brutalist designs, these chairs have a more welcoming look thanks to the rounded edges and subtle, decorative carvings on the top, which has a folk appeal. The minimalistic design does not prevent these chairs from being comfortable, which can be observed in the ergonomic design of the seats and curved backs. The sturdy, tapered legs provide a firm base for these chairs, while the backrests offer solid support for the back. Ekerö is a locality (urban area) and the seat of the eponymous Municipality in Stockholm County, Sweden, which could have been the inspiration for the model’s name.

Nordiska Kompaniet was founded in Stockholm in 1902, and to this day, it is regarded as one of the most renowned Swedish furniture manufacturers. The department store reflected modern society in different ways; it was a palace where much was possible and here, consumption became not just a necessary everyday routine, but a lifestyle and a pleasure.
