Swedish architect and furniture designer Axel Einar Hjorth served as the lead designer for Sweden’s Nordiska Kompaniet department store from 1926 to 1938. During this time, Hjorth designed the “Sportstugemöbler” series (which translates to “sports cabin furnishings”), a collection of wooden furniture designed for country homes. The various models in the sportstugemöbler series took their names from the Stockholm archipelago – including Blidö, Lovö, and famously, Utö.

The ‘Utö’ chair was designed in 1932 as part of the collection. Unlike the department store's interiors for floors and villas in the cities, the ‘Utö’ design had a simple character with robust and minimalist basic shapes in solid pine. Accordingly, the design of this chair focuses on clean lines and the material itself. Made of pine wood, the chair is strong, reflecting Hjorth’s principles according to which he mixed the ideals of the modernist movement with provincial Swedish traditions, producing a unique and primitive modernism. It demonstrates a conscious construction aesthetic, where the joinery and fittings related to traditional craftsmanship are emphasized. Dominated by rounded, yet defined lines, the chair has a spindle backrest and ergonomically carved seat. The design eludes harmony and stability, fitting the summer cabin concept perfectly.

Hjorth's aesthetic alludes to both the traditional simplicity of the common people and the radical aesthetics of international modernism. The ‘sports cottage furniture’ that this dining chair is part of also had an influence on the designer’s contemporaries and inspired Carl Malmsten, among others. In an international perspective, Hjorth's “sportstugemöbler” series was the forerunner of later pioneering designers such as Charlotte Perriand. It is therefore no surprise that the ‘Utö’ chari became part of Swedish and international modernist design history. In their time, the pieces of the Utö collection may have appeared as pioneering and radical, but today they are viewed as status symbols in interiors of international character.

About the designer:

Axel Einar Hjorthwas born in a small Swedish village named Krokek, just outside Norrköping, on March 7, 1888. At the age of 20, he moved to Stockholm to study architecture and design at the Högre Konstindustriella Skolan.

Although he never graduated, in the 1920s Hjorth started working as a furniture designer for various manufacturers, such as H. Joop & Co., Myrestedt & Stern, Jonssons, and Nordiska Kompaniet. Hjorth’s designs from this period had neoclassical features combined with Swedish Grace. This romantic national style of Sweden was elegant and refined, yet simple. The anniversary exhibition of 1923 in Gothenburg marked the breakthrough of Swedish decorative arts, and made Axel Einar Hjorth a well-respected artist. From October 1926, Hjorth became the chief designer and architect of Nordiska Kompaniet department store in Stockholm. In the 1930s, Hjorth designed a furniture collection out of pine meant for serial production known as Sportstugemöbler (furniture for holiday houses).

Hjorth’s designs, from the luxury of neoclassicism to the severity of functionalism, are sharply distinctive in style, materials, and character. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Hjorth did not conform to the socially oriented ideas produced by Svensk Form (the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design). He played a significant role in the development of Swedish society as a whole, and particularly in Swedish industrial art

Today Hjorth is often viewed as a precursor to the modern designs popularized by Charlotte Perriand, Jean Royére, Pierre Chapo, or Josef Frank. Recently, there has been a revival of appreciation for his work, showing his genius in a new light.

Designer Bengt Ruda was the first qualified designer to be employed at IKEA. Before being recruited in 1957, he had designed furniture for the high-end department store Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), working among other things on the self-assembly Triva series.

The “GRILL” chairs are distinctive for their three-legged design, crafted from laminated teak and birch. These materials lend the chairs a natural and warm appearance. The splayed birch legs also provide stability and a touch of Scandinavian simplicity to the design of the chairs. Moreover, these chairs boast a sleek and contemporary look that seamlessly blend functionality with style.

“GRILL” is a good example of how, from the early days, IKEA focused on smart product development. In 1958, “GRILL” won the jury award at the Society of Crafts and Design’s major design exhibition – the forerunner of Excellent Swedish Design. It is easy to see where the nickname of these chairs stem from. The slightly curved backrests have decorative razorblade-shaped cutouts, an unparalleled design feature. The chairs are visually stimulating, featuring both angular and rounded shapes. The scalloped pattern is mirrored in the seats as well, tying in the rest of the structures to the backs. Wood is the most traditional material for furniture, it is organic, elemental, sturdy, and has become very stylish. The Swedish efforts to create applied art attuned to modern man and his needs have been termed a style, Swedish Modern. Exemplified by these chairs by Swedish designer, Yngve Ekström, the style entails cherishing natural forms and an honest treatment of material.

While during the industrial revolution, furniture manufactured from materials such as steel, aluminium, glass and plastic, began to appear, wood has remained a staple material in Swedish furniture manufacturing. The design offers plenty visually with a striking construction and personality. The fan shaped backrests are composed of wooden spindles with a horizontal top with a soft curve that creates a wavy impression. While the masterfully sculpted and symmetrically arranged individual spindles undeniably define the overall look, the seats and legs are just as appealing, showcasing the natural beauty of the wood and the careful craftsmanship. The seats are carved ergonomically to accommodate the sitter, while the legs are splayed to provide stability. For further structural firmness, three stretchers connect the legs. The manufacturer, Nesto Möbel AB, formerly Nässjö Stolfabrik AB, was one of the largest furniture factories in the Nordics which operated from 1870-1992. In 1972, AB Nässjö Stolfabrik changed its name to Nesto Möbel AB.

“To have designed one good chair might not be a bad life’s work” Yngve Ekström once said. With colleagues like Aalto, Mathsson, Jacobsen and Kjaerholm, Yngve Ekström was part of the post-war modern movement that made the concept “Scandina­vian Modern” world-famous. His furniture is represented in many permanent collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

About the designer:

Yngve Ekström was born in 1913 in Småland, where the country’s oldest wooden chair facto­ry was situated. His father died young and Ekström started working in joineries in Vaggeryd at the age of 13. His talent for carpentry and his all-round experience gave him a unique feeling for materials and construction.

Ekström is best known for the "Lamino" armchair, an ergonomic, and minimalist easy chair that he designed in 1956 and which has been in continuous production ever since. In 1999, the "Lamino" was named by the influential Swedish magazine Sköna hem as the Swedish furniture design of the twentieth century.

Ekström was the co-founder of the furniture manufacturer ESE-möbler (later renamed Swedese) with his brother Jerker and business partner Sven Bertil Sjöqvist. Ekström worked at Swedese for over 40 years until his death in 1988.

About the Designer:

Göran Malmvall (1917–2001) was the youngest son of the manufacturing company’s founder, Karl Andersson. He studied furniture design under Carl Malmsten and was involved with the family business from an early age until 1982, mainly in the capacity of an in-house furniture designer.

Self-taught, he was a highly skilled cabinet-maker with considerable technical expertise, and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. His most notable designs include Svensk Fur, Svitjod and, not least, the KA 72 cabinet series, first created in 1972 and already a modern classic.

The manufacturer, Karl Andersson & Söner was established in 1898, when carpentry master Karl Andersson started to produce “durable and sustainable furniture” in his parents' home in the village of Berghem between Huskvarna and Gränna. Over a hundred years later, the historic company still manufactures quality furniture and designer furniture in their own modern factory in Huskvarna.

In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The seats are upholstered in sheepskin. We recommend reupholstery due to signs of wear. Each of our items can be reupholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information.
