The artists who created the so called "Worpsweder Kuentlerkolonie" were looking for the simple and original in art and life. The traditional reed and rush woven chairs of this region were greatly appreciated by the artists of the colony, and some of them were still produced around 1900-1920. They have become collectors’ pieces thanks to the craftsmanship that went into each chair’s creation.

This beautiful set of six stools are crafted in the manner of French design duo Audoux-Minet. Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet worked together during the mid-20th century. The duo are known for their innovative use of natural, sustainable materials, including rope, wicker, and bamboo. While Kay Fisker is considered a leading exponent of Danish Functionalism, his designs show why he was also a great influence on the Danish housing culture. This model was famously brought to Denmark from China by Fisker and there manufactured by Robert Wengler.
Having trained architects and designers such as Finn Juhl, Kay Fisker designed his furniture pieces with the greatest architectural precision and quality. This “Canton” is a one-of-a-kind design, with an immediately recognisable frame and wickerwork. The masterfully woven cane gives this chair an airy look, complimented by the loose, upholstered seat cushion that adds comfort and cosiness to complement the frame. From every angle, this chair is visually arresting; from the front to the sides and back, the curves and geometric lines provide plenty of visual interest. This chair has a distinct designer edge, with clear signs of a skilled architect. The straight lines are mainly in service of the structural stability, while the lower panel in the front are the creation of an equally skilled designer. The back is especially creative, as it flows down to form the armrests and then further down to the legs, creating balance between the curved and straight lines. Fisker, like many of his Danish contemporaries was highly skilled both as an architect and as a furniture designer, and the “Canton” is perhaps the best evidence of that.
The manufacturer, Robert Wengler was a German craftsman who specialised in wicker furniture, and was appointed as a wicker maker to the Danish Crown in 1914. He was a pioneer in working with rattan in the early 20th century and became the most skillful wicker-maker in Denmark.

In 1920, the term "Nieuwe Haagse School" was first mentioned by the architect C.J. Blaauw. And not in a positive way. Blaauw thought nothing of the latest developments in modern architecture. "Typical of The Hague" - that was how the designer spoke of the style. The movement blossomed between 1925 and 1940 and brought uniformity to the cityscape. The Hague School style is closely related to the Amsterdam School and the Bauhaus movement, but has more-so been influenced by Art Deco, and it drew a great deal of inspiration from Berlage's rationalism, the Arts and Crafts movement, and De Stijl.
Standing as evidence of the reason many Dutch architects succeeded at the craft of furniture design; the precision of the structure is evident at first glance, showing great geometric order. Driven by function, the maker’s focus was evidently on practicality, structural stability, and a design in favour of these principles. The construction of this chair is traditional and robust - it features a solid yet graceful frame, crafted from a warm, rich wood, which highlights the natural grain of the material. The arms and backrests showcase a sense of airiness. This neat detail accentuates the high level of woodworking and creates an effortless look. As with the UK and much of Europe, there was something of a design renaissance in France in the 1950s, due to developments in materials and technology after the war. In France, designers were often also architects, whose focus on functionality and quality resulted in sculptural models, such as this armchair. This model is all about the gorgeous teak structure and the cane panels. Pure, sleek forms, free from artifice or decoration characterise the aesthetic; a style that is commonly referred to as reconstructivism. A reconstructivist design builds upon prior, deconstructionist models and techniques, but adapts them to classic themes and structures, with the goal of creating works of genuine emotion and significance. This armchair in particular recalls the chairs of Swiss architect, Pierre Jeanneret’s designs for Chandigarh in India.
The body features octagonal mesh cane webbing, which is an elegant material that enhances quality and complements the teak wood. The "Stora Kraal" easy chair was originally designed by Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist in 1952, and was quickly incorporated into Nordiska Kompaniet’s famous Triva Collection, a new versatile furniture series aimed at modern, postwar consumers.
Lacquered metal, wicker and leather. This model is defined by its materials and its immediately recognizable design created by the masterful combination of them. Known for her unique and humanistic design vision, Hörlin-Holmquist created the Stora Kraal according to these principles. Accordingly, this model holds a soft simplicity and a uniqueness in its appearance - light, clean lines with organic materials and form. Without worrying about short-lived trends and what other people thought, Hörlin-Holmquist created the peculiar, shell shape of this chair that is only increasing in popularity. The design is very open, the backrest flows down and opens up to form the armrests and wide seat. While the armrests sit low and hardly separate from the back and seat, they still give the impression of hugging the sitter. The woven wicker body is held by the metal structure that is composed in a masterful way, providing stability despite its light, minimal appearance.
Hörlin-Holmquist took a larger role in the development of the Triva Collection to provide Nordiska Kompaniet with a variety of furniture designs and interior fittings that expressed a modern Scandinavian ethos through soft lines and adaptive humanism. About the Designer:
Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist was born on May 30, 1925 in Arvika, Sweden. She was a Swedish modernist architect and designer. Hörlin-Holmquist graduated from Stockholm’s Konstfack in 1952, and before that she studied and worked in England.
She often worked with her husband Erik Holmquist, and together they modelled and created the pieces together. A key aspect for the couple was always to test their designs in their own home before completing a project.
"I think both furniture and textiles, wherever they end up, must be kind, gentle and courteous, but without losing their character. They should have human qualities, not be pompous and only stand alone, but be able to adapt to the environment they end up in..."
Hörlin-Holmquist worked and studied in England from 1946-1947 immediately after the war, where she also studied art history and became fascinated with the classic English upholstered furniture and style. Something that without a doubt inspired her own creations later in life while she still developed her own expression. She returned to Sweden where she attended Konstfack from 1948 and graduated from the school in 1952. She started working with Nordiska Kompaniet shortly after her graduation and became a lead designer. Her timeless and iconic ‘Paradiset Collection’ was created during her employment with Nordiska Kompaniet in 1956-1957 and holds a soft simplicity and a uniqueness in its appearance - light, clean lines and yet gracious with an air of romance.
Today, her designs are highly treasured collectibles. She is primarily remembered, for her ability to create designs for the modern home in the 1950s without worrying about short-lived trends and what other people thought - to stay true to her own unique and humanistic design vision. ~H.

This beautiful 'Worpsweder' armchair was designed in the 1920s by German artist, Willi Ohler and was manufactured by Erich Schultz in Germany. The so-called “Worpsweder” either denote chairs made at the Worpsweder Kunsthütten (Worpsweder arts huts) in Germany, or a specific style of German chairs with solid wood frames, broad armrests, often from tall wood, with woven seats and backs.
The “Worpsweather” style’s design language and materiality is embodied in this pair: the structures are made up of solid oak elements. The seats and backs are woven braided from rush. This chair carries with it the same beloved modernist characteristics applied to American, Scandinavian, and Italian mid-century design – simple, functional – and shows the generally less known early 20th century rustic side of German design. The woven rush seat and back define the armchair’s aesthetic. The straight wooden lines of the minimalist wooden frame serve as the perfect canvas to showcase the appealing and artistic rush weaving. Worpswede in Lower Saxony is famous nationwide for its long tradition as an artists' colony. Nowadays, about 130 artists and craftsmen and women live there permanently. The artists who created the so called "Worpsweder Kuentlerkolonie" were looking for the simple and original in art and life. One of the most famous members of this colony was Paula Modersohn-Becker. The traditional reed and rush woven chairs of this region were greatly appreciated by the artists of the colony, and some of them were still produced around 1900-1920. They have become collectors’ pieces thanks to the craftsmanship that went into each chair’s creation.

In 1944, Niels Otto Møller founded J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark, a company that has received many awards, including the Danish Furniture Prize in 1974 and 1981. Møller is an important representative of Danish postwar design and had always been committed to excellence and the use of the finest materials.
Clean, simple designs and the quality of materials and workmanship are why Nordic design is timeless. This “model 67” chair is an appealing example of the above statement. The organically moulded solid wood frame and the woven straw seat make this model a classic. Noteworthy for its beautiful pattern, rush weaving is beloved for its functional and aesthetic qualities. The woven seat of this chair has a tight, visually pleasing pattern in great condition. The frame has exciting curves, especially visible in the front arm supports and armrests that visually complement the frame’s curves as well. The two materials pair very well, the smoothness of the wood highlights the texture of the straw’s fibre.
When Niels Otto Møller designed a chair, he would find the materials and then design the furniture. It is said that each design took him five years to complete. This work ethic - exemplified by this “model 67” chair - is why the Møller collection is relatively small for a company that’s been around for more than 70 years, but that’s what makes Møller so special.

Niels O. Møller (1920 - 1982) is an important representative of Danish postwar design and had always been committed to excellence and the use of the finest materials.
In 1939, he finished his apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker and continued his studies at the Århus School of Design. In 1944, he founded his own furniture factory, J. L. Møllers Mobelfabrik and became an independent designer and producer. Along with the production of classical tradition furniture, Niels Møller worked for two years in a small workshop of the factory to design his first chair: N° 1. From there on, the company produced all models of Niels O. Møller. Over the years J.L. Møllers Mobelfabrik grew and began to export to Germany, the US and Japan.
In 1981, the company was awarded with a "Dansk MøbelIndustri Furniture Prize" with a special mention for its ability to combine quality craftsmanship and modern production. Niels O. Møller remained famous for his elegant teak and rosewood furniture as the iconic series 78, a model of lightness and purity. It is a reference in Scandinavian design. Today, J.L. Møllers remains family property and continues to produce all models of Niels O. Møller.

Less famous than their Western European contemporaries, Czechoslovakian prolific creators were no less talented. They were asked not to design artistically but to create furniture for the “volk”, or ordinary people. Pieces were expected to last, to be versatile, easy to reproduce and functional, but also elegant and well-designed.
Overall, Czech mid-century modern designs tend to be more sober than their French, German, American, and even Scandinavian counterparts. As demonstrated by these chairs, form and decorative elements played a role, but innovation and artistry took a backseat to factors like functionality and ease of production. This pair has a sober design that relies on materials as the primary decorative elements. The solid beech frames are governed by straight lines with the seats and backs covered by woven sections of wicker. The only entirely decorative element is the rounded end of the elongated back legs. However, the design manages to use functional elements in a decorative way as well, which is most apparent in the wider wooden plates on the armrests. Aesthetically, the wickerwork stands out thanks to the expert weaving technique and the natural beauty of the material. The wicker accentuates the beech frames and the gentle curve of the seats and backrests as well.
For much of the 20th century, industrial, and furniture designers in the Eastern Bloc created their work in near anonymity — including in the former Czechoslovakia, where communist ideologies ran counter to capitalist ideas like branding and acclaim. About the Designer:
Robert Guillerme graduated in 1934 from the École Boulle where he excelled in architecture and furniture design. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops.
In 1948, Guillerme was joined by his long-time friend, decorator Jacques Chambron in Lille. The following year Guillerme and Chambron met master cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, owner of a woodworking shop and the company Votre Maison was born. Together, they defined and imposed a new furniture concept. Thanks to their distinctive creativity, originality, and quality, the Votre Maison quickly became well-known.
The Votre Maison marked the history of French design. Guillerme drew the furniture designs while Chambron played the part of salesman, welcoming and advising clients. The power duo was complemented by Dariosecq, whose workshop took charge of the manufacturing. Together, they defined new furnishings concepts. Well-crafted chair back, polished wood and thick cushions make the reputation of their armchairs and sofas. It was in Denmark that Modernism reigned between the 1920s and 1960s and produced some of the most iconic pieces of furniture to this day. The Danish modernist movement was shaped by two influences. This elegant armchair pair by Dutch designer, Bas Van Pelt is a classically luxe model with a level of craftsmanship that’s immediately visible to any eye. The construction of this rare 1940s design is simple at its core, but thanks to the details, it is a unique representation of early Dutch modernism.
While Bas Van Pelt's creative work was primarily influenced by the 1920s straight lines dominated by The Hague School, this model is the result of his more mature design era, which was primarily dominated by natural materials and more curvature. While made of solid wood and wicker, these armchairs have an open feel thanks to the airy arrangement of the arms and legs. The curved lines of the armrests are beautifully crafted and follow the raised seat’s angle. The curves nicely contrast with the straight lines of the frame, keeping it from appearing too strict. Apart from the expert woodwork, the upholstered seats stand out as well. The fabric is tightly fitted within the frame, and the seat’s thick shape is an especially pleasing element that offers plenty of comfort both figuratively and literally.
