Rare Pierre Chapo "S42" Chairs in Elm, France 1970s (sold)

Rare Pierre Chapo "S42" Chairs in Elm, France 1970s (sold)
Designer and woodworker Pierre Chapo was an iconic French designer, who created timeless furniture that fused modern design with traditional craftsmanship. Among his loyal clientele was the playwright Samuel Beckett among others.
Chapo initially set out to become a painter, but an encounter with a shipbuilder in 1947 convinced him to pursue woodworking instead. These extremely rare “S42” chairs combine his many talents in a very apparent manner. Not to be confused with the “S45” model, the present model comprising this set of four has differently crafted legs. Each chair consists of seven elements arranged and joined in an exceptionally creative way, because of which these chairs can also be viewed as sculptures. With its distinctive structure, this set epitomizes Chapo's research for new systems of joinery, in which the material and the design would be the lead factors in achieving stability, durability, and of course, an aesthetically pleasing outcome. The design of this model evidently had to be studied very precisely: the proportions had to be finely tuned to successfully combine a perfect angle of inclination between the legs and the top, but also to calculate the degree that each leg needed to be shaped in relation to the seat, where all the legs and back were joined. These chairs are made from elm, Chapo’s preferred material for his sculptural furniture pieces.
While much could be written both about Chapo and these stunning chairs, words in this case can’t do justice in relaying the visual and technical quality of this set. The use of the sizeable pieces of elm wood with a beautiful grain, the unique joinery and angles, and most importantly, Chapo’s genius make these chairs unmistakeable and invaluable.

About the designer:
Pierre Chapo, born in Paris in July 1927, was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and wood crafts, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After graduation, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started to travel extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright in Taliesin West. A visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs. The work of Swedish designers and cabinetmakers remains disarmingly fresh over 80 years after their creation. There is something universally appealing about Swedish furniture; its simplicity is often copied, but its vibe is difficult to emulate. This is based on a unique medley of elements including solid wood, inspiration from historic and traditional styles and techniques, and of course, master craftsmanship.
While other Nordic countries explored similar design principles, the Swedish interpretation stands out for its refined minimalism. Swedish Modern is an inheritance coming from a rich tradition of beauty-loving people, courageous enough to break away from the past to entertain new forms for living. So, what sets Swedish Modern pieces apart, even within the broader Scandinavian design spectrum, is their particular emphasis on understated elegance. This set of dining chairs exemplifies this approach, featuring a subtle yet distinctive design that effortlessly combines form and function. While dining chairs are generally more utilitarian types of seating, this set of four still manages to look cosy and warm thanks to the pairing of materials. The main decorative element remains the beauty of the birch wood, with its distinctive colour variation and grain. Birch's durability and fine grain also contribute to the longevity of these chairs, showcasing the intersection of aesthetics and practicality inherent in Swedish design. Another defining feature of these chairs lies in their expertly fitted upholstered seats, enveloped in a sumptuous brownish fabric. This choice of upholstery not only adds a touch of luxury, but also serves as a nod to comfort, demonstrating the Swedish commitment to creating furniture that is both aesthetically pleasing and inviting. The simple, warm colour palette and gentle design make this set of chairs an ideal addition to both contemporary and traditional living spaces. It is evident that the maker of these chairs was highly aware of body proportions, prioritising comfort just as much as the visual qualities.
The term Swedish Modern was quickly established as a reinterpretation of modernity during the 1940s, and in the new style, early and square functionalism was replaced by a freer and more artistic ideal. This set of dining chairs beautifully stands as a testament to this rich legacy. Overall, these pieces are stylish from all angles and seek to complement their surroundings.

Henning Kjaernulf’s characteristic “Razorblade” chairs are the designer’s most distinctive model. This set of four was manufactured by the Danish company Nyrup Møbelfabrik in the 1960s, making it a true Danish mid-century set.
It is easy to see where the nickname of these chairs stems from. The slightly reclined backrests are razorblade-shaped, an unparalleled feature that makes the designer’s pieces immediately recognisable. The chairs are visually stimulating, featuring both angular and rounded shapes. The style and shape of the legs and frame recall an almost Baroque design, which is paired with Scandinavian modernism, an uncommon yet impressive combination. The legs are connected with box stretchers, with the exception of the front legs that feature geometrical carvings. Under the seats there are similarly carved aprons. These forms of subtle ornamentation elements make these chairs charming, while also showing off the oak’s natural qualities and the crafters’ artisan skills. The natural wood grain and colour is complemented by the light fabric of the seats.
The strong Danish tradition of carefully considered design and master craftsmanship were carried well into the second half of the 20th century. These expertly sculpted, light oak pieces with the titular Razorblade backrests provide a bold and iconic look that cannot be mistaken for any other designer.

Produced in 1923, this set of four “Bungalow” dining chairs by Nordiska Kompaniet is a true testament of early 20th century Scandinavian design principles, highlighted by the chairs’ quiet simplicity and quality materials. The vision and aim of Nordiska Kompaniet, a leading Swedish manufacturer since 1902, was to focus on innovative, forward-thinking designers to create pieces that would elevate Stockholm internationally and rival the grandness of Paris.
Made of premium quality wood, the set references the natural materials that are in abundance in the deep forests of Sweden, covering more than three-fifths of the country. With the designer’s choice of combining different materials, the open structure of the rattan seats adds lightness and airiness to the chairs, perfectly balancing out their durable birch structure. Beautifully woven, the rattan is placed neatly and creates a comfortable seating experience. The carved elements at the end of the front legs, as well as an inward ring just below the rattan seating, adds to the quiet charisma of the chairs. The two back legs, which tilt gently, continue a line into the backrest that is completed by two cross-rails that support the sitter. The precious details in the birch grain of each chair are wonderfully unique, while the set still projects cohesion due to its warm-toned hues and colours. The smooth, clean finish of the chairs brings forth a refined and elegant appearance into the space they occupy.
The classic design of this set is suitable for a variety of interiors; whether placed around the dining table or used individually, these chairs offer a sophisticated and distinct blend of style and comfort, inviting the sitter to slow down and rest.

Ole Wanscher was a leading figure in Danish and Scandinavian design, as was his mentor, the legendary Kaare Klint, renowned to be the “father” of modern Danish furniture design. Together, they made significant achievements in redefining classic forms. Drawing inspiration from human anatomy, his developments influenced the concept of Scandinavian modernism as we know it today. Wanscher’s contribution to the field is widely acknowledged as he acquired his skills at the esteemed Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi - Billedkunst Skolerne in Copenhagen.
The post-war era, especially the period spanning from 1940 to 1960 resembled the golden age of Danish furniture, and was when Wanscher created his most well known works. CADO, a quintessential symbol of Danish craftsmanship, embodies the essence of functional elegance, with each piece they manufacture reflecting a commitment to the design era. This set of dining chairs retains the cherished Danish modernist traits, such as simplicity and functionality, while also reflecting an ongoing precise focus on quality materials and artistry care. The allure of these dining chairs lie in the detailed backrests with two horizontal slats and an elegant dovetail connection. The structure creates an airy and rhythmic look, further complemented by the legs’ thin figure and slight inward bend aligning perfectly with the flow of the backrest. The intricacies of the wood provides a visual richness, with its polished surface revealing a range of brown tones that shift and dance in response to light and surrounding reflections. This set has been reupholstered recently in a premium fabric, which provides ample comfort and softness. The gorgeous deep green colour of the upholstery covering the cushions contributes to the uniqueness of the chairs, evoking the soft texture of moss nestled among forest trees.
The set seamlessly blends traditional precision with modern innovation, where each chair not only serves a functional purpose but also stands as a timeless work of art. With its meticulous attention to detail and premium quality wood, this set is beautiful and harmonious, and would make a charming addition to a variety of interior decor styles.

Featuring clean forms without exaggeration, this set highlights the quality of work produced at Nordiska Kompaniet in the early 20th century. They are crafted from pine - a valuable material used in furniture manufacturing thanks its natural grain that guarantees that each piece is unique. This characteristic is especially important in the case of this set of four, as each chair is unique, but together they still form a gorgeous set.
Humble in their material and design, the chairs draw attention thanks to their distinctive look and personality. The construction strips back the unnecessary, showcasing only essential elements. The pine wood is left in its natural form as much as possible, while also prioritising functionality and longevity. Pine furniture has been favoured in Scandinavia for centuries and we are witnessing a contemporary renewal of interest and appreciation for it as well. While they showcase deliberate plainness, these chairs still have a welcoming look. The sole form of ornamentation in the design is found in the backrests of each chair where two planks of wood are constructed into a ‘T’ shape, creating an airy look. The high backs and seats also provide plenty of surface to expose the beauty of the wood. Furthermore, the ingenious use of joinery in these chairs is noteworthy, highlighting the structural integrity of the pieces.
These chairs are in line with the Swedish ideals of functional furniture. However, they also portray a sense of tranquillity that is unique to Scandinavia. This set is sure to bring this sense to any space while providing stability, sitting comfort, and natural beauty via its material.

Designer Bengt Ruda was the first qualified designer to be employed at IKEA. Before being recruited in 1957, he had designed furniture for the high-end department store Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), working among other things on the self-assembly Triva series.
The “GRILL” chairs are distinctive for their three-legged design, crafted from laminated teak and birch. These materials lend the chairs a natural and warm appearance. The splayed birch legs also provide stability and a touch of Scandinavian simplicity to the design of the chairs. Moreover, these chairs boast a sleek and contemporary look that seamlessly blend functionality with style.
“GRILL” is a good example of how, from the early days, IKEA focused on smart product development. In 1958, “GRILL” won the jury award at the Society of Crafts and Design’s major design exhibition – the forerunner of Excellent Swedish Design. One of the adjectives used by the panel to describe the little chair was “energetic”.

This rare set bears the unmistakeable oak structures created Danish designer and craftsman, Henning Kjaernulf with the distinctive “razorblade” backs. This set was manufactured by the Danish company, Nyrup Møbelfabrik during the 1970s and has an elemental, brutalist look from a mature era of Scandinavian design.
It is easy to see where the nickname of these chairs stem from. The slightly curved backrests have decorative razorblade-shaped cutouts, an unparalleled design feature. The chairs are visually stimulating, featuring both angular and rounded shapes. The scalloped pattern is mirrored in the seats as well, tying in the rest of the structures to the backs. The style and shape of the seats and legs have a much more pared down look that relies on the natural beauty of the oak. The backs have a unique, arched shape formed by the elongated back legs that near each other towards the top. Thanks to the seamless joinery, there are no visible screws, making the chairs effortlessly elegant. While the high level of craftsmanship is evident from afar as well, the smaller details become evident upon closer inspection. The carefully sculpted seats, the hand carved backs accommodating the backrests, and the scalloped details all speak tales of Danish craftsmanship and its preference for high quality woods with stunning natural qualities.
With a commitment to combine tradition and modernity, this rare set is a timeless classic composed of heirloom pieces from Henning Kjærnulf’s more mature design era that is more streamlined without the Baroque-like features. The chairs’ features are greatly enhanced when they are put together, and thanks to the hand carved details, no two of the six chairs are perfectly identical, making this a truly unique dining set.

Wood is the most traditional material for furniture, it is organic, elemental, sturdy, and has become very stylish. The Swedish efforts to create applied art attuned to modern man and his needs have been termed a style, Swedish Modern. Exemplified by these chairs by Swedish designer, Yngve Ekström, the style entails cherishing natural forms and an honest treatment of material.
While during the industrial revolution, furniture manufactured from materials such as steel, aluminium, glass and plastic, began to appear, wood has remained a staple material in Swedish furniture manufacturing. The design offers plenty visually with a striking construction and personality. The fan shaped backrests are composed of wooden spindles with a horizontal top with a soft curve that creates a wavy impression. While the masterfully sculpted and symmetrically arranged individual spindles undeniably define the overall look, the seats and legs are just as appealing, showcasing the natural beauty of the wood and the careful craftsmanship. The seats are carved ergonomically to accommodate the sitter, while the legs are splayed to provide stability. For further structural firmness, three stretchers connect the legs. The manufacturer, Nesto Möbel AB, formerly Nässjö Stolfabrik AB, was one of the largest furniture factories in the Nordics which operated from 1870-1992. In 1972, AB Nässjö Stolfabrik changed its name to Nesto Möbel AB.
“To have designed one good chair might not be a bad life’s work” Yngve Ekström once said. With colleagues like Aalto, Mathsson, Jacobsen and Kjaerholm, Yngve Ekström was part of the post-war modern movement that made the concept “Scandinavian Modern” world-famous. His furniture is represented in many permanent collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

Yngve Ekström was born in 1913 in Småland, where the country’s oldest wooden chair factory was situated. His father died young and Ekström started working in joineries in Vaggeryd at the age of 13. His talent for carpentry and his all-round experience gave him a unique feeling for materials and construction.
Ekström is best known for the "Lamino" armchair, an ergonomic, and minimalist easy chair that he designed in 1956 and which has been in continuous production ever since. In 1999, the "Lamino" was named by the influential Swedish magazine Sköna hem as the Swedish furniture design of the twentieth century.
Ekström was the co-founder of the furniture manufacturer ESE-möbler (later renamed Swedese) with his brother Jerker and business partner Sven Bertil Sjöqvist. Ekström worked at Swedese for over 40 years until his death in 1988.

The “Svensk Fur” furniture line produced by Göran Malmvall and manufactured by Karl Andersson & Söner is a nod to modernist design with traditional Swedish craftsmanship. The design of these chairs relays an insight about the society and culture in which it was produced: closeness to nature, the appreciation of a clutter-free environment and the value of quality handiwork.
Göran Malmvall’s Swedish pine designs often get compared to the designs of Axel Einar Hjorth, even though its pieces are exceptional designs on their own merit. Self-taught, Göran Malmvall was a highly skilled cabinetmaker with considerable technical expertise, and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. This set of dining chairs holds a strong expression with its sturdy shaped, organic design, which is dominated by the natural beauty of the material. The backrests are formed by straight lines that slightly curve near the edges. This curvature is followed by the seats that are carved ergonomically, creating visual interest. The joinery is visible throughout the chairs, and features both bolts and seamless wooden joinery which is always a sign of quality craftsmanship. The wide backrests showcase the solid pinewood’s beautiful pattern, reinforcing the rustic feel of the design along with the conical legs that are gently tapered and tilted to support stability.
The simple design of these chairs is in line with the Swedish ideals of functional furniture. However, it also portrays a sense of tranquillity that is unique to Scandinavia. This set is sure to bring this sense to any space while providing stability, sitting comfort, and natural beauty via the Swedish pine.

Self-taught, he was a highly skilled cabinet-maker with considerable technical expertise, and was renowned for the boldness of his innovations. His most notable designs include Svensk Fur, Svitjod and, not least, the KA 72 cabinet series, first created in 1972 and already a modern classic.

Mid-century Scandinavian dining chairs were often designed with a focus on proportion, and material quality, rather than decoration. Designers such as Torbjørn Afdal worked within this approach, producing furniture that balanced craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic. His work for Vamo Møbelfabrik in the 1960s reflects this direction, combining a wooden construction with carefully considered lines and detailing. The emphasis was placed on durability and comfort, while maintaining a light visual presence suited to domestic interiors.
This set of six model “113” dining chairs by Afdal features slender wooden frames and clearly structured forms. Each chair is built from solid wood, with legs that taper slightly and connect through horizontal stretchers to reinforce stability. The construction is minimal, with lightweight appearance, allowing the chairs to sit comfortably around a dining table without feeling heavy or visibly crowding a room. The backrests feature a series of gently curved horizontal slats along the frame. These elements introduce a layered rhythm while maintaining the openness of the design. This balance between straight lines and gentle shaping gives the chairs both clarity and comfort. The seats are upholstered in a dark leather that contrasts with the wood, both in a textural and in a chromatic way. The combination of mediums is common in Scandinavian design, where natural materials are used together to create warmth without excess detail.
This set of chairs demonstrate a controlled and practical approach to furniture. The design relies on proportion, material contrast, and careful construction rather than ornament. The set works well for everyday use, maintaining a sleek, elegant character, while not sacrificing their unique mid-century look.
