Wrought Iron Adjustable Floor Lamp with Spiral Detailed Arm, Europe Mid-20th Century (sold)
Postwar European design was defined by a turn toward restraint, elegance, and the intelligent use of materials. Designers of the period emphasized refined proportions, tactile contrasts, and streamlined silhouettes, often blending traditional craftsmanship with a modern sensibility. Within this context, pieces like this adjustable floor lamp were crafted.
This floor lamp is made with wrought iron in a stark dark colour resulting in an eye-catching look, especially thanks to the sharp contrast the light fabric lampshade provides. The design is an interesting unification of Brutalism and mid-century modernism where the two styles create tension that is at the core of the appeal of this lamp. The light colour of the lampshade complements the black body and tames the design to make it fit into a range of interior styles. Anchored by a tripod base, a distinctive feature that offers stability and allows for the lamp to look light and airy, yet still appear grounded. The slender stem flows gracefully upwards into a right-angle neck which supports the shade, providing warm and inviting illumination. The unique shape of the lamp, with its geometric form is sure to be a conversation starter, while providing an ambient atmosphere wherever it is placed.
This floor lamp not only serves as a functional lighting solution but also as a testament to the enduring appeal of European design. Its quality craftsmanship make it a valuable addition to any collection, embodying the rich history and innovative spirit of mid-20th-century artistry.

Carl Auböck II was born in Vienna, Austria in 1900. After finishing the School of Graphic Design and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he attended the Bauhaus and joined a small group of artists in becoming the founding members of the now legendary school.
This pair of “Vice Versa” floor lamps reflects a fascination with sculptural simplicity and materials, while representing a unique piece of design history. The model, first thought to be created by Auböck 1952, has caused a debate within the design world decades after it was first issued. Within Denmark, the “Vice Versa” lamp was widely sold under the label of Svend Aage Holm-Sørensen, a key figure of Scandinavian design. The controversy still surrounds the model today, however what is undisputed is its beauty. Each lamp is composed of a slender black lacquered metal stem rising from a circular weighted base, creating a simple vertical silhouette. At the top sits the defining feature: a shade placed on a round metal holder. The shade can be reversed and re-positioned, allowing the direction and character of the light to shift depending on its placement. This element reflects Bauhaus functionality principles while still feeling elegant. Despite the minimal construction, the lamps have a strong sculptural presence, particularly through the balance between the thin stem and the oversized curved reflector that mirrors the conical base and ties in the design.
In 1925, Karl Heinrich Auböck passed away at the age of 53, leaving Carl II and the sculptor Mara Uckunowa, Carl’s wife, to take over operations of the Werkstätte at 23 Bernardgasse. In 1954 Carl Auböck II was awarded four gold medals at the Milan Triennale for designing a range of metalware, and pieces like this pair of lamps stand as proof of his genius.

The mid-20th century emerged as a golden era in design where form seamlessly intertwined with function, giving rise to beautiful pieces that continue to captivate contemporary sensibilities, like this table lamp. Its maker, Jette Hellerøe started her career after studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and worked for a period at her father's workshop. In 1972, she opened her own workshop in Lønstrup with her husband Flemming Schouboe, where she created ceramics until 2001, where this piece was made.
Featuring a minimalist and functional form, with decorative details and high-quality materials, this table lamp is a unique addition to any space. The design has a clear focus on the ceramic body. The unique base features a beautiful and organic colour palette with illustrative details, giving a clear artistic touch. The body takes a rounded shape, providing the perfect contrast to the cylindrical fabric shade. The lower section stands out through an intricate relief decoration. As light falls across the pattern, the recessed areas catch the shadows while the raised elements become subtly highlighted, giving the base a shifting appearance. This table lamp is the embodiment of modern design’s widely loved characteristics. Danish craftspeople are experts at incorporating functional elements in a decorative way, serving a dual purpose as a result.
Hellerøe is particularly known for her sculptural works, vases, reliefs and lamps, which often have a characteristic Nordic and modernist expression. This table lamp is the perfect encapsulation of her work and the overall Scandinavian ceramic tradition.

This floor lamp, exemplifies the refinement that defines both the era and LUCO Armaturfabrik’s pieces. Itsu, short for Itä-Suomen Sähkö (eng. Eastern Finland Electricity), was a small, lesser-known manufacturer that produced characteristic models in small quantities. Itsu stands as a beacon of innovation in mid-century modern design. This lamp represents an era in which Finland saw the birth of many of its most iconic lighting models.
The form of this pair is built around an opal glass diffuser that has a slightly conical and rounded profile that gives it subtle depth without becoming visually heavy. With its sleek and simple aesthetic, and in the absence of heavy ornamentation, the emphasis falls on materials. The use of opal glass is central to the design. The diffuser softens the glow and disperses it, creating a more ambient and balanced illumination. The relatively small diameter and shallow projection also means they can be used in tighter spaces without disrupting the proportions of the room.
The 20th century was a time of great innovation in Finnish design, as makers pushed the boundaries of what was possible with new materials and manufacturing techniques. At the same time, there was a strong emphasis on simplicity and functionality, as this pair demonstrates. As designers sought to create objects that were both beautiful and practical, they left an unforgettable mark in the history of light and ambiance.

Kähler Keramik, founded in Næstved in 1839, played a defining role in the development of Danish studio ceramics, combining generations of craftsmanship with an openness to artistic experimentation. Nils and Herman Kähler took over the family’s ceramic business in the 1940s. The brothers began their careers as designers, but fourth-generation potter Nils quickly assumed control of the artistic direction of the firm.
This lamp, attributed to Nils Kähler, produced during the 1960s features an expressive ceramic body. The lamp is composed of a tall, elegantly tapered stoneware body that narrows towards the neck. The lower section is wider and features a finely debossed geometric decoration, creating a rhythmic pattern that catches the light without interrupting the clean outline of the form. Its warm earthy glaze reveals subtle tonal variation across the surface, ranging from soft brown to muted olive. The upper section is left unadorned apart from delicate horizontal throwing rings that emphasise the hand-crafted nature of the piece. Paired with a curved textile shade, whose undulating edge echoes the organic character of the ceramic body, the lamp achieves a carefully balanced composition. The contrast between the smooth glazed surfaces, the tactile pattern, and the off-white shade gives the piece a quiet elegance.
More than a functional lighting object, the lamp demonstrates the close relationship between Danish studio pottery and interior design during the post-war decades. As an example of 1950s Scandinavian ceramics, it offers a blend of artistry, craftsmanship, and everyday usability.

This “6942” model is by Swedish designer and sculptor, Harald Notini. He was the artistic leader at Böhlmarks and is represented at the ‘Nationalmuseum’ in Stockholm. Between the 1920s and 1950s, Böhlmarks was a significant player in the Swedish design movement. Harald Notini, after becoming creative director in 1916, drove the company forward, producing what were considered pioneering and distinctive luminaires for the time.
Like many of the decade’s designs, this table lamp masterfully pairs different materials. Notini cleverly combined brass, lacquered metal, and wood to create this distinctive model. The decorative brass elements tie the materials together in a design that is indeed innovative and modern, yet still fresh to the contemporary eye. The amalgamation of materials creates a harmonious contrast, epitomising the 20th century design principles that sought to marry functionality with form and - most importantly - elegance. French lighting manufacturer Lunel became known for producing elegant modernist fixtures that balanced sculptural form with functional clarity. Collaborating with designers such as René Mathieu, the company developed fixtures that combined elegant engineering with sculptural forms, often introducing articulated arms and highly distinctive shades that transformed functional lighting into expressive design objects.
This wall lamp reflects that direction through its minimalist construction and carefully balanced proportions. A long, slender arm projects confidently from the wall to hold a striking diabolo-shaped shade, formed by two opposing cones joined by a patinated brass collar to create an hourglass-like profile that immediately draws attention. Its light, pale surface contrasts sharply against the darker metal structure, while the black ring detail at the centre visually ties the shade back to the frame below. The articulated arm allows the lamp to be adjusted with ease, extending its functionality while enhancing its visual appeal. At the same time, the small wooden detail showcases the precision and attention poured into every part of this piece.
The combination of adjustable construction and sculptural form reflects the spirit of French mid-century lighting at its best. Many of the pieces produced by Maison Lunel borrow the same sober and refined design vocabulary, which makes them highly sought after by collectors and design aficionados alike.

Fridtjof Sejersen was a Danish ceramicist in the postwar period, known for his material experimentation and expressive surface work. From the early 1940s to the late 70s, through his company, Sejer Keramik, Sejersen explored the tactile and visual possibilities of chamotte clay and richly textured glazes. His work sits comfortably within the broader context of Danish modern design, where craftsmanship and artistic individuality were valued as much as functional clarity.
Rather than pursuing strict minimalism, Sejersen’s pieces emphasise depth, surface variation, and a bold handmade charm, giving them a strong presence while remaining rooted in mid-century design. This table lamp is a striking example of mid-century Danish ceramic design, combining the era's affinity for natural materials with an emphasis on uniqueness. This particular lamp features a round shaped body crafted from glazed chamotte stoneware, a type of ceramic known for its durability and textured finish. The body thus offers the piece a natural feel enhanced by the organic relief pattern. The appreciation of nature and simplicity can also be observed through the earthy tones of the lamp, mixing with blues in a flowing, organic pattern. The shade is made out of a light-toned fabric complementing the body through its wavy edge.
As a whole, the lamp represents the strengths of Danish mid-century design, where simplicity was a way of allowing material, form, and light to shine. Beyond its practical use, it represents a moment in Danish design where studio ceramics and functional objects came together seamlessly.
