This daybed, in the style of Italian design icon Paolo Buffa, is a true testament to the glory days of mid-century modernism. French industrial designer Oliver Mourgue obtained his degree in Interior Design at the prestigious École Boulle, from where he went on to pursue his passion in furniture design at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. After training in Finland and Sweden, he then began his collaboration with Airborne International, one of France’s most successful and influential design companies of the modernist era.
In 1965 he designed the ‘Djinn Series’, inspired by the figure of the ‘djinni’ (genie), a mystical creature of Arabian fairy tales capable of morphing into human or animal form. This fluid uncertainty is clearly visible in the elegant shape of the daybed, where curved edges and softly folded ends connect seamlessly with the low-slung seating. The carefully crafted ergonomic design moulds perfectly to a resting human figure. The slender, slightly conical wooden legs are made from patinated beech. The legs balance out the body well, creating a light look. The elegant shape is formed by the raised back and the round, soft edges. This daybed is an exceptional piece of Dutch design that was exclusively produced by Eugen Schmidt Soloform (later Eugen Schmidt GmbH in Darmstadt) and Artifort. While many daybeds have been “inspired” by Ruth’s present design, this original model remains very limited in numbers.

About the Designer:
Dutch designer Theo Ruth was born in 1915 in Maastricht. He trained as a furniture designer and interior designer at the Middelbare Kunstnijverheidsschool in Maastricht (which later became the Maastricht Academy of Arts). In 1936, he joined Artifort in Maastricht, where he specialized in designing living room furniture. Just three years later, in 1939, he became head of design and development, a position he maintained until his death in 1971.
Ruth was Artifort’s first permanent designer, and had a major impact on its design legacy. His most famous pieces include the 1952 Congo Chair and the 1953 Penguin Chair, both of which were constructed from two interlocking pieces that fit together without locks or screws (the latter’s original version featured a black back and a white cushion to mimic its namesake). Børge Mogensen designed for function more than sculptural effect. Daybed Model 190 was designed in 1954 for Fredericia Furniture and shows Mogensen’s strong design ideals putting functionality and longevity first.
Among the great mid-20th century Danish furniture designers, Børge Mogensen distinguished himself with his faith in traditional values of craftsmanship and honesty of materials. He focused on making pieces that were simple, durable and comfortable, while his chief tenets were quality of construction and simplicity of line. Even though he was a classicist, who believed that furniture forms should evolve from those of historical models, Mogensen shared the aesthetical sensibilities of his most forward-looking colleagues. This daybed has a simple look with understated elegance executed from high-quality materials. The solid oak construction stands on four round, tapered legs and has a lamella top with an upholstered mattress on it. Since the aesthetic is dominated by straight lines, the mattress has button tufting to bring depth into the appearance and accentuate the light coloured fabric. Danish furniture maker Fredericia Stolefabrik was founded in 1911 by N. P. Ravnsø in an industrial port town of the same name. From the start, Ravnsø built Fredericia's reputation on quality and hired only the most skilled craftsmen he could find. In 1955, the Ravnsø family sold Fredericia to Andreas Graversen, whose first order of business would be to hire Børge Mogensen as head of design.

About the designer:
Børge Mogensen is without a doubt one of the most famous Danish designers. Born in 1914 in Aalborg, Mogensen was trained as a cabinetmaker and studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen from 1936 to 1938, and architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture between 1938 and 1942.
At the beginning of his career, he became head of F.D.B. Mobler’s furniture design studio. In 1950, he started his own design studio, collaborating with manufacturers Soborg, the Swedish company Karl Andersson and the famous manufacturer Fredericia from 1955. The collaboration with the latter resulted in many of Mogensen’s most famous furniture pieces, including the “Spanish Chair” and the “Ambassador Sofa”.
Mogensen’s goal has always been to design and produce quality furniture for the people, with longevity, quality and timelessness in his focus. Because of this, Mogensen was known as “the people’s designer”, a true pioneer in democratic design. In 1972, he was awarded the C.F. Hansen Medal and was appointed Honorary Royal Designer for Industry at the Royal Society of Arts in London. ~H.

About the designer:
Bernhard Pedersen & Søn, is a Danish furniture maker company with a long and strong tradition in furniture and cabinetmaking, stretching all the way back to the company’s start in 1902. Through three generations the family firm has created and sold classic Danish furniture to many parts of the world.

Every piece of furniture is made in the same factory built by the Bernh. Pedersen family in 1902, located in a small community in the Danish countryside. The workshop and its skilled cabinetmakers are known for their exquisite and dedicated work based on strong Danish craft traditions; traditions recognized around the world for timeless design, high-quality craftsmanship and outstanding longevity. Unique techniques, special tools and original machinery are maintained and used to produce the sideboards in keeping with the first original pieces. The sum of it all is captured in the phrase: Made in Denmark.
Today, the fourth generation in the family, Thomas Bernhard Pedersen is focusing on an exclusive selection of the company’s most exquisite sideboards designed by Danish furniture designers, including the world-renowned architect Johannes Andersen. Every piece of furniture is made in Denmark by skilled cabinetmakers and in keeping with the strong Danish craft traditions. In 2015, great-grandson Thomas Bernhard Pedersen re-established the company and started focusing exclusively on relaunching some of the exquisite furniture designed in the 1950s and 1960s.
